Tony Squires cracks the codes
19/3/2009
Tony Squires has worked as a journalist for 25 years and become one of Australia's most popular media personalities. Growing up in Newcastle, he played junior footy with the Lakes United Seagulls until he realised that real footy players didn't mind the idea of getting hurt. He quickly swapped from being on the field being hammered to standing on the sidelines giving free advice.
In Cracking the Footy Codes, he's written a book that makes it all clear. Everything is explained, simply and clearly: the sublime beauty of an attacking back line in union, the gladiatorial contest that is league, the poetry in motion of football, and the truly awesome marks of AFL.
Tony currently pumps out a weekly column about popular culture in his unmistakable style (shallow, undergraduate and self-indulgent) in the Sunday Telegraph. Also, Tony is the co-host of the Breakfast Show on Vega 95.3fm.
His professional passion has long been sport, or more accurately, watching other people play sport. He progressed from watching other people play sport to talking about other people playing sport on television without ever leaving the couch. Tony’s move to hosting the ground-breaking sports chat show The Fat on ABC Television was an unexpected reward for a lifetime of laziness.
